EW3D SpamProbe Setup Instructions

E-mail Clients
EW3D.com has decided to support only the use of the Thunderbird e-mail client in conjunction with SpamProbe. Netscape and Mozilla e-mail clients are almost identical, so these instructions also work well for them. There are simply too many versions of Outlook and Outlook Express with renamed and relocated buttons and menus for us to begin to write install files for them. At present, we have not found the ability to copy message to another folder within the Eudora mail client which is an all important feature needed to work with SpamProbe. We do have users who have been successful in setting SpamProbe up within Outlook and Outlook Express. Basically, if you follow the basics within these instructions to the same end result, those mail clients will work with SpamProbe.

Getting Started
If you choose to use Thunderbird you can download it here. Thunderbird is a free stand alone e-mail client just as Outlook is a standalone e-mail client. It has been created from the open source version of Netscape, the Mozilla Project, which is the active version of the old Netscape. Mozilla, like Netscape, has the e-mail client built into the same program as the browser, Thunderbird operates independly of the browser. There is also available a stand alone browser from the Mozilla Project which is called Firefox. All of these projects are under active development, with versions for almost any operating system. We personally use these products as the browser and e-mail client due to their practices of more closely following html standards, java standard and more importantly, have a much higher level of security against attacks upon your system.

  1. Download and follow the installation instructions for the Thunderbird e-mail client.
  2. You will need to setup two e-mail accounts.
  3. Click once on the local folders to bring up a list of options in the right hand pane.
  4. Click on 'Create a new account'
  5. Select the radio button next to 'Email account' and click the 'Next' button
  6. Enter your name or the name of your organization which will be displayed as the sender name for this email account.
  7. Enter the email address used for this account, such as myname@my_domain_name.com. This will be displayed as the sender's return address and should be a working email address. Then click the 'Next' button.
  8. Select the radio button to the left of 'POP' and enter the name of your 'Incoming Server'. This is mail.your_domain_name.com
  9. Enter the 'Incoming User Name' if it is different from what is entered for you. This is the username for this POP email account, which may not be the same as the name selected as the return email address. Click 'Next'
  10. The account name is how it will be displayed locally in the email client. We suggest using POPdomainname or something which contains 'POP' in this name. Click the 'Next' button
  11. Check the information and click 'Finish' which will connect you to your POP account on the EW3D.com server. At this point you will be asked for your password. Enter it and if you want the Thunderbird to remember your password, check that box and click 'OK'
  12. Take a breathe, read an email or two if you have any and then we'll move on to doing almost the same thing again.
  13. Click on 'Local Folders' again in the left pane and again in the right pane select 'Create a new account'
  14. Again, make sure 'Email account' is selected and click 'Next'
  15. And yes, repeat the input for your name and email address and click 'Next'
  16. Here we begin to differ. Select the 'IMAP' instead of POP and input the name 'Incoming Server' which is mail.your_domain_name.com. Then click 'Next'
  17. Again, enter the username for this mail account, which is the same one you used above and click 'Next'
  18. Enter the Account Name to help you identify this account in Thunderbird. We suggest using IMAPyour_domain_name. Click 'Next'
  19. Review the settings and click 'Finish'
  20. Click on this new account name (IMAPyour_domain_name) in the left pane.
  21. Click 'View settings for this account'
  22. Click 'Server Settings' under this IMAP account
  23. Uncheck 'Check for messages every ?? minutes
  24. Check 'Empty Trash on Exit'
  25. Click on the 'Advanced' button
  26. In the 'IMAP server directory enter ~ (the tilde sign found to the left of 1 on your keyboard) and click 'OK'
  27. Click on 'Offline & Disk Space' under the IMAP account.
  28. Under 'Disk Space', select the box to enable setting 'Messages larger than' and enter 1 then click 'OK'
  29. "Right" click (use your right mouse button) on the IMAP account name in the left pane and select 'Subscribe'
  30. Wait for a moment while the folders are found and downloaded from the server.
  31. Click the '+' next to the IMAP folder to expand its view
  32. Make sure there is a check mark to the right of 'your_spam' or click on your_spam until there is a check mark beside it.
  33. Click the '+' next to the 'Corrections' folder to expand its view
  34. Follow the above proceedure to be sure there are check marks beside 'is_spam', non_spam and not_scored
  35. The 'Trash' box will likely have a check beside of it. No other items in this display should be checked. Click 'OK'
  36. In the left pane of Thunderbird, you should now see an IMAP folder. Click the '+' to expand the view, then click on the '+' beside 'Corrections' to expand that view.
  37. The installation is complete! Please now go to SpamProbe Use Instructions to learn how to use SpamProbe.
